About Marsten House Publishing...
My name is Ian S. Bolton and I am a self-confessed ‘locations guy’. That is, I love to identify television and film locations years (sometimes decades) after the cameras have rolled off set.
It is a hobby that I’ve indulged in for over 20 years, starting in 2003 with the cult 1966 film BLOWUP, starring David Hemmings and Vanessa Redgrave. Over many years I have identified and photographed all 27 filming locations, and created a website to share them - www.blowupthenandnow.com. (I even managed to track down the Rolls Royce used in the film.) The website is a bit old and clunky now, and needs a refresh, but it still does its job.
I first fell in love with Stephen King’s SALEM’S LOT novel back in the late 1970s. It is still one of my all-time favourite books. When the mini-series was announced, and being a huge fan of David Soul (via Starsky & Hutch and Magnum Force, etc.), it was impossible to resist. The rest, as they say, is history. It was first broadcast in the UK in 1981, two years after the US, and has been my favourite horror series ever since.
It wasn’t until the 2014 that I decided I would go ahead and start the process of location-hunting. Creating a website - www.salems-lot.com - to share the information, and a Facebook group (Salem’s Lot Then And Now) to source and share information. (Little did I know that this group would grow to have over 21,000 members!)
MARSTEN HOUSE PUBLISHING
The plan here is to publish locations guides, scripts and non-fiction books relating to the 1979 mini-series, with an emphasis on pricing them to be attainable for fans, but offering more expensive collectables for fans and collectors who are happy to pay a little bit more.
(And what better name for a publishing 'house' than Marsten House...)
THE FILMING LOCATIONS GUIDES
These are planned for Ferndale, CA (published August 8, 2026) and the Los Angeles area (coming soon), following-on from the Salem's Lot Then And Now website and the location details there.
These are offered at 8" x 5" (203 x 127mm) size, thus making them more portable for your visit to the locations.
THE SCRIPTS
Let us be upfront about these: 1) they are not the original scripts; 2) but, neither are they cheaply done photocopies - they are copy-typed from original scripts (or converted from existing pdfs and cleaned up), thus ensuring accuracy and presentability, with no pages skipped.
Of the six states that will be offered here, the four original scripts* are really hard to find now on the second-hand market, and are prohibitively expensive if located - for instance, there is a late SHOOTING SCRIPT that has opening and closing credits, and revisions for July 5 and August 21, that has been sitting on eBay for ages at a price of $2,500... (Too much for my pocket, though I would dearly love to have it.) Of course, there are cheap photocopies of the script with cast signature reprints on the front cover on eBay, ETSY, etc. but be careful - some of them have pages skipped in the copying process!
* FIRST DRAFT, REVISED FIRST DRAFT, SHOOTING SCRIPT, SHOOTING SCRIPT (with revisions).
The other two states offered here have never actually existed before in print, but are literally taken from the broadcast mini-series and theatrical release, thus giving fans a chance to follow the absolute final state of the complete script as they watch.
These are offered at 8.5" x 11" (216 x 279mm) thus reproducing their original US dimensions.
SCRIPT COMPARISONS
These are probably meant for serious fans and completist collectors, but I would still like to offer these at competitive rates. They illustrate the script's changes through the re-drafting and editing process from first draft to broadcast state.
Happy reading everyone!
